I was…
Lost within the game of golf. When first attending Indiana Wesleyan as a freshman, I fell in love with the idea of being a student-athlete. I let this infatuation with the game of golf turn into my identity. Golf became more of a lifestyle for me instead of a sport that I play. If I had a bad day at the golf course, everyone knew about it and I became someone who I’m not. If I played well, then I was someone who became prideful.
The real struggle was being redshirted my freshman year. For a guy who solely identified in his sport, this was something that knocked me down a few levels. I felt very discouraged and alone. This led to many days and nights of isolation that I did to myself. I felt very out of place while watching others play and go to tournaments while I stayed at school which at the time made the insecurities grow.
But Christ
Showed me that there’s no room for growth when I find my identity in a sport. At the time of being redshirted I was discouraged and hurt, but God used that year to help me change my focus from me to Him. My focus changed and as a result so did my attitude. I found myself to be more encouraging and joyful on the golf course as a result. I put more time in on the golf course by myself and used that time to be alone with God.
Being alone on the golf course has turned into my getaway for me ever since my freshman year. I enjoy using that time as a way of reflecting on my relationship with Him and how I can improve my relationship with others at the same time.
And now…
I take every opportunity laid out in front of me as a chance to show others the love of Christ. The game of golf presents itself with some unique opportunities to really invest into playing partners lives. During one round, I may be paired with the same 2-3 people for up to six hours. This is such a great opportunity to tell others about Christ or show the love Christ through actions.
While being redshirted hurt me and my confidence at the time, it has presented some amazing opportunities within our very own team. I have been very intentional and encouraging with others on the team because I know how it felt to be isolated. While isolation was a result of my own personal struggle, it is very important to me to make sure everyone feels like a part of the team and the mission we have as a team.
Life Verse
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
Challenge to Other Athletes/Coaches
Take a step back and be grateful for the platform we are given to show others the love of Christ. As athletes/coaches we are blessed to be involved in a sport that we have fallen in love with. God blessed us with talents that many others long for, which puts us in a position that not many others get to experience. Be a shining light to others around us, because we may not realize what kind of an impact that it could have on their lives.
